Awareness & Overthinking… friends… and kinda not…
There is a difference between awareness and rumination, and it is subtle enough that many people confuse the two. Awareness brings clarity. Rumination creates loops. Awareness notices something and leaves room for choice. Rumination notices something and replays it until your nervous system is exhausted.
If you find yourself thinking about the same situation over and over without new insight emerging, that is not self-awareness. That is your system searching for safety or resolution. It does not mean you are doing something wrong. It means you may need regulation before reflection.
True awareness often feels grounding, even when what you notice is uncomfortable. It gives you information without urgency. Rumination feels tight physically as well as mentally loud. Learning to tell the difference is a powerful emotional skill.
When you reflect on your own inner dialogue, how do you know when you are gaining insight versus when you are stuck in a loop?
